The past, experience and education
We got acquainted with Kelly Chan during the biennial tradeshow of young designers " Who's Next " unwound in Paris, in September this year. Amongst the stands exposed to present bags, within a team of smiling and dynamic young girls and boys, Kelly has proposed to present her creations. Her own creations because she is the founder of the Vicious Venom brand.

"I am not your typical designer in the sense that I have had no formal design training at all and began the label purely out of my strong personal interest in fashion, urban culture and nature." And it is quite true: the fashion, urban culture, nature and sobriety outlines of his creations have kept me savoring the forms of his bags.

"In fact, I was formally educated in law and up until a few years ago, was a practicing criminal lawyer in Hong Kong.  Interestingly, my legal background has been very helpful for the new venture.  It has not only equipped me with the skills necessary to handle the complexities of launching and running a business but also gave me a very practical no-nonsense problem-solving approach to the product designs. "

On a more personal level, Kelly is a city girl at heart but also an avid snowboarder and beach-goer. "I generally love travelling, exploring and being outdoors. In my spare time, I try to spend as much of my personal time being outside with my dog as possible. Not just on the sunny days but the stormy ones too. We love puddles!"

The origins of the brand
Her own experiences and needs tend to dictate what she would design.
Kelly grow up between London, Hong Kong and Vancouver. All beautiful world class cities but all very rainy ones. Since she is currently based in Hong Kong where it is common to have weeks of torrential downpour during typhoon season, it was actually a necessity for her to have a trustworthy waterproof bag. "Especially since a lot of the times, I commute by motorbike. After lots of research, I discovered that there were no good looking bags on the market that served that function."

"So I would say I decided to devote myself to the design of THE ELEMENTS COLLECTION out of my desire to satisfy my own needs: My love of travel, adventure and most importantly, vanity. After all, form, function and quality need not mutually exclusive. And that is what I set out to do with this collection."

Vicious Venom bags design style
As Kelly describes it, the design style of the bags can be summed up with a few words:  Minimalistic, Practical, Urban, Contemporary, Chic and perhaps most importantly - Distinctly Different. "My business partner (Charade) and I have been heavily involved in the creative direction of all our photography and videos thus far. We absolutely love that part of the job because we feel that the imagery helps tell our brand and product story in an artful and fun way.

For the latest campaign imagery for example, Vicious Venom wanted to let people know that because the bags are so versatile (in both form and function) that they can literally go everywhere and anywhere with the user, including - a shower.  Because bags are personal and an intimate part of people’s lives (it holds all that is dearest and valuable to you), we wanted to get that message across through edgy memorable imagery. (See latest campaign image). "We have had such a great experience working with our go-to photographer (Chris Luk) here in Hong Kong."

The targeted niche
"I feel that the pervading culture of wellness and self-improvement, exploration and confidence has compelled consumers to invest on items that not only look great but make them feel confident and prepared.  Luxury items or experiences are often justified by having a functional, performance-oriented reason. I also firmly believe that this culture is not ageist."

If we look at the high-end active wear and sneakers markets, people of all ages embrace the trend and that is why "I feel that The ELEMENTS collection, as truly fashionable luxe performance bags, are and can really be for people of all ages".

The ideal customer are:
ACTIVE. Jet set / WANDERLUST lifestyle. Lives in a rainy city. Spontaneous. ADVENTUROUS. Bold + never to shy away from a new experience. Lives + enjoys life. Outdoorsy. Experienced SHOPPER. Tasteful. Stylish + MODERN . Recognizes quality. Confident. Fashion conscious.

The Sources of Inspiration
The collection is uniquely designed in the sense that "I have to cater to the method of construction (ultrasonic heat welding) when determining their aesthetic". Having said that, "I would say that the biggest source of inspiration for me is actually the contents of my own closet!  I have a pretty fixed personal style and absolutely adore Martin Margiela and Yohji Yamamoto so they are definitely sources of inspiration."
The design is mostly conceived by Kelly. "I show all my initial designs and ideas to my Dutch husband (Danny Fang) who is also a designer but with much more experience than myself! His feedback is always valuable."

The hardest moments in the production process
Learning about heat welding and construction. "I also love getting my hands dirty so to speak, and so I really enjoy putting things together myself to see what works and what doesn’t work as well."
The most difficult part of the production process by far "is working with my suppliers to convince them to try something new". Because traditional dry bags on the market focus primarily on function and generally have a rugged and sporty aesthetic, it was what the suppliers were used to making. They did not understand why certain details had to be included and that the finishing had to be impeccable. "So I would say that convincing them that the detailing mattered and then working with them to figure out new ways to getting that detailing onto the bags was the most difficult part."

Events in the coming months
"Currently we have been lucky enough to find retailers in Berlin, Paris, Amsterdam and Hong Kong to carry our bags. With Christmas and the holidays coming up, we will be doing some promotional events locally in Hong Kong to not only try and catch the holiday shoppers but also put our name on the map!"
"We are also already working on limited edition bags and new additions to the collection for next season and can't wait to debut!"
